Taking Pride in Baltimore!
Greening Main Street

Looking towards the future many businesses on Main Street have the opportunity to be leaders when it comes to environmentally friendly practices.  Although much of the focus through our local government and federal government seems to be placed on the buildings themselves there are many things a business can do to have a positive impact on the environment without making drastic changes to the infrastructure or building itself.  Targeting business operations is the first step in becoming green.  Some of the ways you can impact the environment through every day inexpensive actions will actually save you money in the long run.

Some quick tips on how to make your business greener include;

Put storefront window display lights on timers to provide lighting until 10:00 pm or so instead of           leaving lights on all night.
Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent or LED bulbs.
Reduce the amount of packaging used for customers' purchases.
Offer a small discount to customers who bring and use their own bags.

These are just a few ideas on how businesses can be more environmentally friendly at little or no cost to pass on to the consumer.

Small businesses have been the backbone of our economy for years and have the opportunity to transform much easier than large corporations.  Small steps like these will show customers that small businesses are willing to take the next step forward and cater to a growing customer base that seeks out environmentally friendly businesses.

Throughout the summer the Brooklyn and Curtis Bay Coalition will be selling recycling bins in front of the Bay Brook office.  Staff will be on hand with helpful tips and resources on how everyone can take small steps to improve our environment.  Having a recycle bin will be very important in the coming months as Baltimore City plans to reduce the amount of solid waste you are allowed to put out on the curb for pick up.  However Baltimore City has stated that you will be allowed to place unlimited recyclables out for pick up.

A small rectangular bin is $5 and a large bin with a lid is $15.

Stop by the Bay Brook office at 320 E. Patapsco Ave. on the following dates to pick your bin up.

June 13th 10am – 2pm
July 11th  10 am – 2pm
